California, 3rd November, Salt Creek

We decided to drive a little way to see Salt Creek, an area of brackish water which sustains several species of pup fish, not surprisingly unique to this location. These fish are descendants of those that originally lived in this area in ancient times when it was a lake, and they have been marooned in these springs, isolated from the rest of the world. They cannot be seen all year round and obviously, November was one of those times. Nevertheless we had a nice walk around the boardwalk in the warm sunshine, accompanied only by a lizard or two and a couple of wardens who were doing some repair work. You can see how barren the surroundings are and it was surprising to find a dragonfly skimming the surface of the water.
