Croatia 3rd October, Krka National Park

We finally left Split mid morning and drove north west until we came to Skradin, gateway to the Krka National Park. Here we parked the car, bought tickets and boarded a boat to take us up the Krka River to the start of the Skradinski buk trail. Views from the boat trip are shown in the first three pictures. The river flows in a canyon, up to 200m deep through the limestone hills, and the water has deposited calcium carbonate which formed the travertine ledges and waterfalls. The algae and mosses help trap the calcium carbonate which over millennia form the tufa ledges. You walk on boardwalks through green avenues passed running streams with glimpses of the waterfalls. Cyclamens were growing wild under the trees and the pools teamed with fish. There was not a lot of water in some of the streams and the falls would look a lot more dramatic in the spring.
