Guernsey, Day 6, greenhouses and late flowers

Image
In the morning I went with Sue and Sheila from the Camera Club, to Candle Gardens in the grounds of the Guernsey Museum. Parking in St Peter Port, it is a bit of a puffy walk up the hill to get into the gardens on the outskirts of the town. The old Victorian greenhouse had an exhibition of orchids, and I was surprised at how much was still in flower in the gardens. I did some straight photography and also a few multiple exposures of the plants.

Guernsey, 3rd Day, a wet night in town

As if we hadn't done enough already on the day, it had been arranged for the group to go into St Peter Port and photograph some models. This had been arranged by Guernsey Camera Club and Ann Miles from Cambridge Camera Club to whom thanks should be given. In fact Ann organised the whole trip on Guernsey in her own completely selfless way and it is not surprising that she has recently been awarded a medal by the RPS for her services to photography. Not that my efforts on the night were a particular service to photography! The models we are working with were two local girls. It was going to be difficult photographing them without lights, and without using flash in the darkness of St Peter Port, anyway. But the fact that it initially was bucketing with rain did not help either. Any way, with incredibly high ISO I converted their pictures to black and white to give a bit of a 'noir' feel.

Guernsey, 2nd day, St Peter Port

On the second day of our visit we made an excursion to Herm, a small car free island a short ferry ride from Guernsey. We had got to St Peter Port in good time for the ferry which allowed me to take some pictures in the town. Ann had suggested the we make a project out of the trip. I thought using the Holga lens on my Nikon might be interesting, and also relaxing, as it is very light and you cannot really focus it properly! I started as the ferry left the dock in St Peter's Port and here are those few.

Guernsey, 1st Day, Lihou Island

Image
After lunch we drove south to visit Lihou Island, a small headland that gets cut off at high tide. The weather that had been cloudy in the morning became even more oppressive and there were some very stormy looking scenes over the water. On the mainland opposite the causeway is yet another German gun battery. Late that afternoon we all went down to St Peter Port which has some old bathing pools opposite castle Cornet, which came into its own as the lights came up.
