Road to the isles, 4th July, Calgary to Tobermory

Image
Overnight it had rained torrentially, and there is nothing like the beating of the rain on a metal roof to keep you awake. So feeling slightly groggy, I went down to the beach the next morning with my camera shrouded in a Tesco bag to look at the view. And it was dramatic, even apocalyptic. I was eventually driven back inside by the rain and we drove off east towards Tobermory. We passed through the village of Dervaig and stopped by the Loch an Torr, a manmade lake. The rain had stopped now and the water glistened on the side of a rocky crag. We made coffee in the small car park and decided to return to Dervaig as it seemed worthy of a visit, back across the fairly exciting steep and bendy road. Dervaig is supposed to be the 'prettiest village in the Hebrides' and indeed the main street is fringed by old cottages built around 1800. We did a little shopping in the local store and watched from the car as the local dairyman unloaded his crates from the back o...

Sizewell in the winter

Image
I am trying to catch up with a few excursions undertaken earlier in the year. Here are some pictures taken one late afternoon in February at Sizewell, Suffolk. The light was lovely and we stayed until the sunset had passed.

Holiday in France 23 - last morning

Image
We spent the night at the grotty campsite in Wissant. The next morning we were due back to Dover on the Eurotunnel leaving at 4.00pm, so we had the morning free. Alan went out for a spin on his bike and I wandered back down to the beach for some shots. It was a beautifully warm day for the end of September and there were a few people on the vast expanse of sand. I took mainly ICM and multiple exposure pictures using a Hoya 8 stop neutral density filter. But I will start with 3 straight ones, including one of Hettie doing what she loves best.

Holkham bay seascapes - the sea itself 1

Image
The water was warm and we were encouraged to take a dip. I realised that it would be good to take pictures of the breaking waves while in them and had a 9 stop neutral density filter on my camera which slowed the water down nicely. Here are some of the results.

Holkham beach seascapes - the horses

Image
I spent  a day in Holkham last week, when the weather was warm and the sea ripe for bathing. We spent some time watching the horses being exercised along the shoreline and here are some pictures from this. I have used intentional camera movement and, in some cases multiple exposure, with these shots.
