Venice day 6 the Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Image
It was out last full day in Venice, and we set out after a late breakfast to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection which is housed in a single storey palazzo in the Dorsoduro area of the city. This 18th century building was intended to reach up to 4 floors but never got beyond the ground one, hence it's name, Il Palazzo Nonfinito. It was bought by Peggy Guggenheim in 1949 as a home and she filled it with works of modern art, especially of those artists she patronised. It is a wonderful collection, housed in beautiful large and airy rooms and a good contrast to the rather stuffy churches and other museums in Venice. Here are also sculptures in the gardens and great views down the Grand Canal. As we walked down to cross the Ponte Accademia to Dorsoduro the sun was fairly high and reflecting off from the cobbles giving a remarkable warm light.

Venice day 5, an infrared afternoon

Image
Still having the infrared camera on me we left the naval Museum and took the vaporetto over to Santa Maria della Salute, the church immediately across the lagoon from Piazza San Marco. This great baroque edifice was built to celebrate the end of the plague in 1670. The interior is a large rather characterless space. Following our visit we crossed back to San Marco over the Ponte Accademia and went back to the apartment. I have converted all of these infrared pictures to monochrome.

Venice, day 2, an evening stroll

We dropped our shopping off at the apartment and walked back to Piazza San Marco. It was January and the sun was retreating quite early in the day. I had wanted to see the lagoon in it's sunset colours and it seemed only right to make some pictures of the bobbing gondolas. Well everyone else has done it!! Next we walked across to the Accademia Bridge and looked at Santa Maria Della Salute before we crossed over for a closer inspection. The bridge was full of people and bounced a lot. The Santa Maria side was quiet and a little eerie. Fortunately on the way back the crowds had thinned out and I was able to use a tripod to take some pictures down the Grand Canal. Venice, day 2, out and about around the Grand Canal

Image
After completing our tour of the Doge's palace we emerged onto Piazza San Marco to a brilliant January sun. The gondolas were bobbing nicely on a limpid sea and we had a look at the Bridge of Sighs we had walked over earlier. We caught the vaporetto up to the Rialto where we had been told there was a food shop -  a Co-op no less, where we bought provisions for the apartment. Everyone in Venice seemed to dragging around wheely suitcases to carry home their shopping, clanking over the cobbles.  On the way home we stopped at our local church, San Stefano, to have a look inside.
