Venice, day 2, out and about around the Grand Canal

Image
After completing our tour of the Doge's palace we emerged onto Piazza San Marco to a brilliant January sun. The gondolas were bobbing nicely on a limpid sea and we had a look at the Bridge of Sighs we had walked over earlier. We caught the vaporetto up to the Rialto where we had been told there was a food shop -  a Co-op no less, where we bought provisions for the apartment. Everyone in Venice seemed to dragging around wheely suitcases to carry home their shopping, clanking over the cobbles.  On the way home we stopped at our local church, San Stefano, to have a look inside. Venice day 2, San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale

Photography is not allowed in the church, but I managed a sneaky shot from a balcony which shows the ornate gold mosaic finish of the walls. We next 'did' the Doge's Palace. The prison area was the most exciting, especially as you could look out through the windows on the Bridge of Sighs and imagine being a prisoner taking your last view of the outside world. I have never seen so many Tintorettos in one place. And vast they were too. However some looked ra...

Venice day 2, a trip to Piazza San Marco

We were staying in a rather quaint apartment in an old part of Venice with tiny lanes and backed by a narrow canal. So quaint that when I tried to use the electric stove the whole place fused! Here are a few pictures from our early morning trip to Piazza San Marco, about 20 minutes away. The first shows the wooden door to our flat, on the right at the end. Being January the streets were mercifully quiet.
