Hey hey USA -17th October - City of Rocks

The City of Rocks State park was certainly impressive. It occupies an area of around a mile and rises up from the Chihuahuan desert at about 5200 feet above sea level. There was a massive volcanic explosion here around 35 million years ago and erosion since has formed the columns and boulders existing today. They are arranged with lanes running between them like city streets.

There is a little botanic garden here as well with different types of cactus which are labelled up for identification.

Before we arrived I had thought I would like clouds for the backdrop, and then I thought I would like some sun to give shadows. In the end I got both with the sun coming out briefly towards the end of our visit and then vanishing again. As you can imagine lots of photographs were taken. It was quite chilly as we were walking around and a certain amount of coatage was necessary.
